Brushes

Best for EYFS, KS1, KS2 and Secondary Students
Easily Accessible via the Apple Apps Store
Intuitive and engaging

Creative expression can take many forms and often that means creating something with physical materials. Brushes by Redux is the closest approximation between physical artistic skills and practical painting. The simplistic app provides learners with a blank canvas to build on. A range of brushes can be used with different textures and personalities. That might seem like a strange word to use, but it’s quite accurate. Different brushes react to the canvas in different ways. Likewise, on this app, if you want to darken an area of your canvas you have to press down harder and go over the area with more paint. You can use pinch gestures to zoom in to different parts of your work but apart from that, the experience is very close to real painting.

Pic Collage

Best for EYFS, KS1, KS2
Easily Accessible via the Apple Apps Store
Intuitive and engaging

Designing and formatting digital documents is endlessly creative. Combine that with photography and you have got a very creative project on your hands. Pic Collage does exactly that. You can use the iPad camera to snapshots or pick pictures from your camera roll. When you have a collection of images, you can then plaster them on to an intuitive collage workspace. The images can be edited and rearranged as well as adapted with filters and so on. The collage can also be added to with stickers, gifs and text. The tools on the app can help young learners to create mood boards and posters or clever collections of images. Whatever the end result is, the built-in features of the app can teach a child a lot about photography, design and formatting without them even realising.
