Math Fight

Best for KS2 & Secondary
Easily accessible via the App Store
Simple to use and very engaging

Parents can encourage mathematical practice at home by getting involved themselves and adding a little bit of a competitive edge to the process. Math Fight is the perfect app to do just that. It is a one on one math game against the clock. Players sit either side of one iPad and compete answering addition, subtraction or multiplication questions as fast as they can. Whoever answers first gets a point. The winner is the player with the most points when the time runs out. The result is a mathematical practice that doesn’t feel like revision. The game masks the act itself and before the learner knows it, they are answering all sorts of mathematical questions in their head quicker than they ever have before. Watch the quick Math Fight tutorial below.

Geoboard

Contemplating area and space is a difficult thing for young children.

At schools, teachers will have a range of resources to tackle this subject, from rulers to measuring wheels. At home, you might not have the resources or space to truly explore this area of maths. Luckily, Geoboard is a good alternative. This simplistic app helps children to conceptualise the area of shares and distances in fun and engaging ways. And it doesn’t take up any space.

Some spreadsheet knowledge required

Spreadsheet generators require a huge amount of mathematical skill and formula knowledge if you wish to get the best out of them. However, Numbers is a much more intuitive spreadsheet app that simplifies some of the more frustrating functionalities. This is why secondary students will have a much better experience exploring the mathematical elements of this app than on any of the other spreadsheet generators out there. Creating meaningful graphs and analysing data is all far more accessible and engaging.

Learning formulas and applying them to spreadsheets is far more clean cut. Overall, it is an easier platform to get to grips with and it still results in some professional data documents.

Time Tables Rockstar

Best for KS1 & KS2
Easily Accessible via the Apple App Store
Subscription and school management needed

One of the most effective and engaging mathematic tools I have ever seen. Many Primary Schools are already seeing the benefits of this simplistic application. Times Table Rockstars essentially turns time table revision into a fun and competitive game. A game that is so engaging that it has renewed enthusiasm for times tables (which is no mean feat). The fact that it is a web-based app only adds to its mathematical majesty. I would strongly recommend that schools who were previously considering TT Rockstars should look into it right now. It’s easy to share logins with your children remotely so that they can get going straight away

For parents of very young children, the worry is that they will miss out on some of the fundamental mathematical skills taught from the very beginning of their educational journey. Maths Age 3-5 is another app that explains exactly what it is within its name. This app contains fun activities for the youngest of mathematicians and takes them through the basics of patterns, sequencing, shape recognition, volume and so on. It really can make up for a lot of the fundamental lessons children may well be missing.
