Google Expeditions

Best for KS2 and Secondary Students
Easily Accessible via the App Store
Some general applications skills needed

Not being able to live the house poses a problem for subjects like Geography. Teachers will often aspire to show children first hand any given Geographical phenomena even if that simply means venturing out onto the school field for a lesson.

Luckily, Google Expeditions is a great way of providing virtual field trips for Geography students. The app is essentially a bank of VR videos displaying all sorts of geographical wonders across the world. Visit a volcano or observe a waterfall. The apps search bar is an easy way to find a place or geographical feature that is linked to any given learning objective. What's more, each video contains ‘highlight notes’ that offer pupils more information. Whist I have been concentrating on Geography for this description, it’s worth saying that Google Expeditions is a great tool for History and Science too. There are all sorts of resources on there that can make Science, History and Geography learning fun.

Podcasts are one of the few sources of media that haven’t been massively effected by social distancing and isolation initiatives. This means that Podcasts are one of the only ongoing and up-to-date episodic forms of information out there. Having said that, lockdown or no lockdown, the Podcasts app is useful at any time especially for learners who wish to expand their History, Geography and Science knowledge. There is a whole wealth of engaging content out there on all three of these subject areas. Simply open the app and use the search bar to find podcasts on your subject of choice. It is a great way of continuing to learn new things and there are titles that specifically relate to national curriculum objectives. For example, there are podcasts specifically dedicated to GCSE, A-Level and Higher Education revision. The exams are cancelled but there is no reason why learners can’t try to retain the knowledge they have worked so hard to learn in the first place .

KS1 Science for Kids - Tappity

Best for KS1
Easily accessible from the App store
No technological skills needed

Sometimes an app’s title says it all. This is particularly true in the case of this app. It is specifically built for key stage one children and it’s science games are a lovely way of introducing younger learners to a range of different topics. The content follows the current science curriculum and is pitched perfectly at the age range it is designed for. For parent’s who are worried about the wider curriculum not being covered at home, I would recommend exploring this app along with some of the other offerings from Tappity (the developers). It might not fully bridge the gap between scientific learning in school and homeschooling science, but it will certainly come close.

iMotion HD

Best for KS2 and Secondary
Easily accessible from the App store

Some editing knowledge recommended

Science and Geography are both subjects that feature the capturing of processes. It could be changed in the weather. It could be the decay of an apple. It might even be capturing of an entire day. All of this is made much more engaging and easier to achieve through iMotion HD. The app can be used to create time-lapse videos that capture processes manually or automatically. Over long stretches of time, the app will take photos and stitch the images together to create a sped-up version of events. You can decide how quickly you would like to view the time-lapse. This feature means that you can really analyse the processes that you have captured. Its brilliant app for engaging geography of a science project.
